I. Core Characteristics and Design Philosophy

Unlike ordinary bearings (such as deep groove ball bearings) that need to be installed within shafts and housings, the design philosophy of roller bearings is "integrated functional unit". 

Form follows function: The outer ring is specially thickened and widened, and often undergoes special treatments (such as quenching and grinding), so that the outer cylindrical surface can directly serve as the contact surface for bearing and rolling. This simplifies the mechanical structure and eliminates the need for additional design and installation of rollers. 

High radial load-bearing capacity: The roller bearing is designed to withstand huge radial loads. Its interior usually uses needle rollers or cylindrical rollers as the rolling elements, which are in line contact. The bearing capacity is much higher than that of ball bearings with point contact. 

Impact and vibration resistance: The sturdy outer ring and the structure with fully packed or densely arranged rolling elements enable it to withstand strong impact and vibration loads. 

Compact design: Due to integrating the functions of the bearings and rollers into one, the installation space is saved, making the overall structure of the mechanical equipment more compact and lightweight. 

Low-friction rolling: By replacing sliding friction with rolling contact, it significantly reduces motion resistance, noise and wear, and enhances mechanical efficiency and lifespan. 

II. Main Types and Structural Characteristics

Based on their internal structure and external shape, roller bearings are mainly classified into the following categories: 

Ball roller bearing 

Structure: Composed of a thick-walled outer ring, a needle group fully packed or with cages, and usually an inner ring or spindle with edge guards for guidance. 

Feature: It is the most compact type in structure. Within the same installation space, it can provide the highest radial bearing capacity. The friction torque is small. 

Application: Cam followers, pistons, guide rail systems, etc. 

Cylindrical roller bearing 

Structure: Replace needle rollers with cylindrical rollers. The rollers are larger in size and may be fewer in number, but they still possess extremely high radial load-bearing capacity. 

Features: Excellent rigidity in heavy-load conditions, smooth operation. 

Application: Suitable for extremely heavy-duty scenarios, such as the chain wheel support of large conveyors and steel rolling equipment, etc. 

Cam follower bearing 

This is the most representative type among the roller bearings. Essentially, it is a needle roller bearing with a bolted central axis. 

Structure: The outer ring of the bearing is the rolling surface, the inner part contains ball bearings, and the center is a bolted shaft. One end of the shaft has threads for fixation, and the other end may have a locking nut. 

Features: Extremely easy to install. It can be directly fixed to the frame using bolts, allowing its outer ring to move along the cam profile or track. 

Variant: 

Standard type (without sealing cover): The outer ring is open on both sides. 

Sealed cover type: The outer ring has sealing covers on both sides, and the interior is filled with lubricating grease. This design effectively prevents dust and water from entering, and extends the product's lifespan. 

Eccentric type: The threaded part of the axis is eccentric. By rotating the axis, the gap between the roller and the track can be adjusted slightly to eliminate the backlash. 

Track roller bearing 

Structure: Specifically designed for the track support wheels and guide wheels of construction machinery (such as excavators, crawler cranes). 

Features: It needs to withstand extremely high impact loads, as well as harsh conditions involving mud, water and sand. Therefore, it has a highly robust sealing system, a strong outer ring, and an optimized internal roller structure.
